HOKUTO NO KEN (Last Battle) …and some filler

Posted by Sega Dude on November 27, 2011

I’ve started to realize that the games I get the most kick out of adding to the collection are often the oldest ones.  There something about the first few Genesis years. I’m not sure if it’s because I’m aware of most of the early release games or if it’s the game themselves or even if it’s the art and style of the cases. For example I really like the Genesis games that have the old style of a black cases with the white grid lines compared to later games that got much more colorful and detailed. Of course I like the newer ones too but these old one stand out. And from re-reading my own post I can see I’m not doing a great job describing this. I’m thinking it’s because it was these first early year when I was most into the Genesis and these games generate the most amount of nostalgia for me.

Anyways, this is what was going through my mind whenever I would see an ebay posting for Japanese Mega Drive game Last Battle. I have a great copy of the Genesis version and I always wanted the Mega Drive version too. This game was one of 4 that I got with my first Genesis . That was a very good day 🙂
This game never turned up often and it was usually much more expensive then I expected. Because really, Last Battle is not a great game. It’s not even good. It’s just ok. Having it day one really did help because the graphics were great and that alone did add to the enjoyment. I loved powering up and I loved the boss fights but the levels really just felt like filler.

$15 HOKUTO NO KEN
$3 Thunder Pro Westlers
$4 TAIKOU RISSHIDEN taiko koei

All in with shipping: $30

HOKUTO NO KEN (Fits of the North Star)

You can see HOKUTO NO KEN is not mint but it is in good shape. The white at the top edge of the cover and the curl on the corner of the manual are all that’s not perfect. I’m very please to add this one to the collection!

You can see a little clipping that was left in the case when I received it. If anyone can translate the note it would be very cool to know what it says. Because it is really odd. It looks like the hint is about something to do after you have died. What could it be?Whenever I buy something from an ebay seller with good shipping rates I always look for something else they have. The other two games were cheap and will stack nicely behind other games that I care more about 🙂 They are in excellent condition too.

Pick-Ups – Super Key and Sailor Moon!… really?

Pick-Ups Sailor Moon

I would have never guessed that I’d end up with a copy of Sailor Moon for the Mega Drive. Yet here it is and it’s in excellent condition.
When I saw this post on ebay I was excited about getting my hands on the Super Key that was bundled with Sailor Moon.

I’ve never seen Sailor Moon on ebay so I’m wondering… Is it good? Is it rare? Either way it’s in the collection now.

$57 all in for both Sailor Moon and the Super Key with shipping.

Mega Drive - Sailor Moon

I tested my new Super Key with Sailor Moon and Golden Axe III and it works. My North American NTSC Genesis can play them with no problems.

Sailor Moon and Super Key Screen

Some day I might try modifying one of my Genesis’ with region switches and maybe even s-Video mods too. But for now I’ll at least be able to play any game.

Golden Axe 3 and Super Key Screen
For anyone not familiar with the Super Key it’s a cartridge that will allow you play any region game in any Genesis or Mega Drive.

Genesis - Mega Drive Super Key

Without this Super Key both Sailor Moon and Golden Axe III will only play in a Japanese Sega Mega Drive. With the key they will load in a Euro PAL Mega Drive and a North American Sega Genesis. It’s a great accessory to have if you don’t want to have one console from each region plugged in and ready to go.

Geelw’s Mega Drive Collection

A fellow Mega Drive collector posted a few comments on my site recently and as a result I found my way to Geelw’s WordPress site and to what looks like a great Japanese Mega Drive collection.

Some of Geelw’s Sega Mega Drive Collection

I’m thinking that there is more to this collection but this is the only image I was able to find on Geelw’s site. I’ve left a comment asking if Geelw is willing to share more pictures of it.
But even from this image it looks like a great collection! You can check out the post where I found this image here.

So it cost me an extra $15 for have a replacement game sent because my original order never arrived. But in the end I have my copy of Star Odyssey. I’m looking forward to checking out this Sci-fi RPG.

In the picture you’ll see Star Odyssey and Legend of Wukong. Both are from Super Fighter Team.

Boxed Joysticks

Posted by Sega Dude on October 18, 2011

I didn’t really need joysticks but I couldn’t resist picking these up anyways.

The two boxes at the bottom of the picture are new in the box. I couldn’t believe how great their condition is. Together they cost $20 plus shipping.
The multi-tap is also like new and I got it because I had a plan to use it to extend my wireless RF receiver such that I could place the receiver on my TV for better reception for my wireless joystick. Later I realized I just need two joystick extension cords.
The black boxed joystick I received when I bought a boxed Genesis ($45) off craigslist. It’s not like new and the joystick inside is broken.
