Did I say it was a good time to be a retro gaming fan? I’m pretty sure I did and it really is 😀
After stumbling onto the fan project Golden Axe Myth I started looking for others and it didn’t take long to find them. I’m going to do my part to get the word out there.
SorR Project by Bomber Games is a complete, ground up remake of Sega’s Streets of Rage. It combines many different elements from Streets of Rage 1, 2 and 3; including playable characters and enemies. As well as original cut scenes and eight endings. The list of features is extensive and you can find all the details at the SorR Project Blog.

I haven’t yet beaten Streets of Rage Remake but with 93 stages in story mode it sounds huge. I’m sure this will keep my attention for a very long time. It also has 10 alternate game modes. See a sample of both below:

As awesome as this is, I’m torn on some of these better-produced fan made projects. I really appreciate all the hard work that goes into them, but they almost always get shut down at some point once word gets out and the lawyers get involved. I think some of these folks should just get the OK before they set out to do all this work (because it stinks to put years into something only to have to yank it from the internet) or even better, just do completely original projects inspired by their favorite games that won’t get a cease & desist sent their way…
On the other hand, it would be cool if some of these folks got hired to work on paid projects by Sega or some other company, so there’s that…

I know what you mean. But it seems like people are putting in the work anyways. I’m hoping that companies like Sega will come around and start embracing this love. Sega has put time and money into remaking games but they haven’t done them well. And I know geelw agrees the example of Sega Ages 2500 is a good one. Most of these remakes are poor visions of what can be done with these games. I’m hoping that Sega can see what these awesome fans have done and understand that this is what we want.
Embrace the fans and even partner up with them when they’ve done something extraordinary. Do I have to say it? I love Sega. But they’re dying and a union with this tremendous fan base could help rejuvenate the company.
Sega – Join it or allow it. Don’t snuff it out. None of these recent examples that I have blogged about are trying to make any money from your IP.
(p.s. please translate Sega Ages 2500 Phantasy Star Generation 1 and 2 😀 Great job on these ones!)
