I haven’t done much with my Nintendo collection yet despite having plans to take it online like I have with my Sega collection but that hasn’t stopped it from getting noticed.
Over the weekend my collection was Raided! It was deliberate, carefully planned and had a singular objective.

I didn’t get to enjoy my boxed and complete Contra 3 for long before it was taken away from me and added to Jon’s collection. This all went down while I was upstairs BBQing for Jon and our friends. He’s very smart… Food is one of the few ways to get me out of my basement.
The ‘Deleted Scenes’ video above will give you a nice sneak peek of Jon’s Retro Video Game collection and even his G1 Transformers collection too. Slowly he’s starting to come around to the idea of getting his collection online. We might get to see more soon.
What could be more Japanese than a Sumo Wrestling video game? This is a fun looking 2D fighter with pretty good 16-bit graphics.
Maybe this is where E. Honda was recruited from? 🙂
This game is in excellent shape and I think a very cool addition to the collection.
Surging Aura is yet another very cool looking JRPG that I cannot play because it’s in Japanese. Even though the graphics aren’t quite as good Surging Aura looks very similar to Phantasy Star; which make this all the more troubling.
The narrator of the clip below translates most of the text as he plays and it’s cool to get a taste of what’s going on.
I’ve read that several translations have been started but I don’t think any were ever finished. With any luck it will happen someday.
Until then this is still a great looking game for the collection. It’s in excellent condition and even came with a small Surging Aura pin.
Surging Aura
Exile is an interesting mix between top down RPG (like Surging Aura) and a side scrolling platformer. And there is a Genesis version. So I’ll be able to play this one!.. once I get the English version.
Exile (Toki no Hazama)
Exile is one of rare Genesis titles which I feel has better cover art than the Japanese Mega Drive version.
These two new additions are ones that I have wanted for a long time despite the fact that the Japanese language will prevent me from playing them.
During my original 8-bit and 16-bit days I fell in love with the classic style JPRG. Which is why I really do enjoy adding any pretty looking JRPG to the collection. These two however usually sell for a lot of money. I don’t know why some people think they are worth a lot but the price is why it has taken me so long to get them for the collection.
I was surprised that I could not find a good video to show off the game play of Dragon Slayer II. It’s very much like Phantasy Star or Final Fantasy in that you visit towns, walk around an over head world map and get dumped into random encounters. Basic classic stuff.
Dragon Slayer II
I do have the English Genesis version of Light Crusader which is must less expensive than the Japanese version. Light Crusader is a title I never discovered when it was new. This is a game I think I want to put some time into. It looks like it will be a very good.
The drawing of the character on the cover isn’t really that good but over all the entire cover does look very good and I love this new addition.
Light Crusader
Dragon Slayer The Legend of Heroes II – $20
Light Crusader – $45
This addition came as a nice surprise. Since the price tag of Michael Jackon’s Moonwalker artificially jumped through the roof when he passed away I was sure I wouldn’t ever end up with a copy. Until a good friend of mine found a copy in a local thrift store. I’ve forgotten exactly how much but I believe it cost him about $5. Which makes this a very good score. It does have some damage to the cover sleeve, cart and manual but the condition is still good. And I’m very happy to have it in the collection.
So yeah, it’s up to Michael to single-handedly stop Mr. Big (the psycho mastermind of crime) from wiping out love on our planet. It actually says this in the manual. Despite being very corny the game itself is much better than what you might think of a hero who dances away gun slinging bad guys while rescuing children. It’s an OK platformer.
Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker
Here’s a little more on my good buddy who gave me this little gem. Every now and again when one of us finds something really good for dirt cheap at a thrift store we’ll text an image to the other showing off our find. If it’s exceptionally good the text image might be accompanied by a short sarcastic message “No big deal…” It might sound pretty mild but let me tell you, sometimes it can cut like a knife.
So I got a text like this and I saw a collection of great Genesis games; including Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker. A short while later by complete chance I saw a different picture of these exact games on Craigslist. I knew right away what was going on. So I called up my buddy and we had words.
Let me put it this way. Say, for example, you’re good friends with David Hasselhoff and you meet a pretty young girl. As gross as it might be it’s your obligation as the Hoff’s friend to introduce him to the young hottie.
And like wise, if you’re good friends with the SegaDude and you find a sought-after Sega Genesis video game you have to give it to him. Or at least give me a chance to buy if from you for really cheap.
Here’s the card my buddy included with the game when he gave it to me –> Thanks Jon!
I do love how active the Retro Video Gaming community is. Recently I stumbled upon a new and excellent looking magazine featuring 19 classic Sega video games. Hardcore Gaming 101 have published the first of what I hope will be many volumes of Sega Retro gaming! Have a look at the following preview video.
And of course I also love seeing new and amazing artwork of so many of our old favorites! The cover (and back) art were created by Jonathan “Persona” Kim.
Persona did a simply wonderful job!
Sega Arcade Classics Volume 1 by Jonathan “Persona” Kim.
Quartet was one of my first games I got with my Sega Master System and one of my favorites. It’s such an over looked title and it was a real pleasure to find my favorite quartet featured just left of Alex Kidd. Mary, Lee, Edgar and Joe have never looked so good!
Yes, of course I’ve already purchased Volume 1. With shipping it cost me $20 and even though I haven’t yet received it I’m already looking forward to Volume 2.
